Your checklist
0 of 9 doneDarpan registration means signing your NGO up on the NITI Aayog NGO Darpan portal, filling its profile, and getting a Darpan Unique ID after the portal checks your papers. It is done online at ngodarpan.gov.in and has no government fee. This page is an independent guide, not the official portal and not linked to NITI Aayog. Do every step yourself on the official site.
What is Darpan registration and who can do it
People also call it NITI Aayog registration, NITI Aayog NGO registration, Darpan portal registration or Darpan ID registration. All of these mean the same NGO Darpan portal registration. That name causes confusion. NITI Aayog does not register or create your NGO. Your trust, society or section 8 company must already exist under its own law. Darpan only records it in a national database and gives it an ID.
Who can register: public trusts, societies, section 8 companies and other registered non-profit bodies. Individuals and unregistered groups cannot. If your organisation is not registered yet, read how to register an NGO first.
Why do it? NITI Aayog says the Darpan ID is needed for grants from central ministries, for FCRA registration or renewal and for 80G. Banks must also collect it from non-profit clients. Grant portals such as the Ministry of Social Justice portal and the e-Anudaan portal ask for the ID before you can even create a login. See MSJE grants.
Before you start: what to keep ready
Most failed attempts come from missing details, not from the portal. Keep these ready on one device:
- The organisation's PAN card, with the name exactly as printed.
- The registration certificate (RC) as a scanned file: trust deed registration, society certificate, or section 8 certificate of incorporation.
- Registration number, date of registration, the Act name and the office it was registered with.
- Details of at least three office bearers: name, designation, gender, date of birth, PAN, Aadhaar, mobile and email. The official sign-up guide allows two for a trust, but three is safer.
- A mobile number and email ID for the contact person. OTPs go to both.
- FCRA number and dates, only if you already have FCRA.
- A short list of your working areas, key activities and any government grant received.
The full checklist with file tips is on NGO Darpan documents.
Darpan registration process: the profile tabs explained
After the sign up, the portal shows a profile with several tabs. The NGO Darpan registration process is complete only when all tabs are saved and the profile shows 100%. This is what each tab asks for, as per the official sign-up guide. Labels may change a little on the newer screens.
| Tab | What you fill | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| NGO Details | Registration number, registered with, date of registration, Act name, address, district, FCRA status, type of NGO, PAN file and RC upload | Copy numbers and dates from your RC, not from memory |
| Member Details | Office bearers with PAN, Aadhaar, source of funds, contact; whether any grant was sanctioned | Include the President or Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer or their equals |
| Key Contact Information | The main contact person, address, district and working area | Use a number that someone in the NGO always answers |
| Best Practices / Activities | Working sector and a description of major activities and achievements | Short, factual: what you do, where, for how many people |
The Act name means the law you are registered under. A trust picks the Indian Trusts Act or a state public trust Act, a society picks the Societies Registration Act or its state version, and a section 8 company picks the Companies Act.
Darpan registration for trust, society and section 8 company
The steps are the same for every type. Only the papers and the Act name change.
- Trust: trust darpan registration uses the registered trust deed and its registration number. Trustees act as office bearers. Is Darpan registration mandatory for a trust? Only if the trust wants central grants, FCRA, 80G, or a bank that asks for it. Today that covers most working trusts. See trust registration.
- Society: use the society registration certificate and the current governing body list. See society registration.
- Section 8 company: use the certificate of incorporation, company PAN and directors as office bearers. See section 8 registration.
How long until the Darpan ID
Once the profile is 100% and saved, the Darpan administrator checks your documents. The official sign-up guide says that if documents are in order you get an email within 48 hours saying you can generate the Unique ID. Real timing can be longer during busy periods. After the email, log in again and generate the ID yourself. It does not appear on its own.
The Darpan ID format is a state code, a year and a serial number, written like XX/YYYY/NNNNNNN. Learn what each part means on the Darpan ID page.
NGO Darpan registration fees and online only
There is no NITI Aayog registration fee for Darpan. Government guidance calls NGO Darpan a free facility. The process is online only. There is no NGO Darpan registration form PDF to post or submit at an office. Some people print the online form to collect details from members first. That is fine, but only the online entry counts. There is also no fixed last date for Darpan sign up, though a grant scheme you apply for may have its own deadline. Check that scheme's notice.
Common rejections and how to avoid them
- Name mismatch: NGO name on PAN, RC and the form differ by a word or spelling. Use the PAN name in the PAN field and correct the rest.
- Unclear uploads: blurred or cut scans of the RC or PAN. Scan the full page in good light.
- Wrong Act or type: choosing "society" for a trust. Match your RC.
- Member details not matching Aadhaar or PAN: use the name exactly as printed on each card.
- Expired registration: some states require society renewal. Upload the current certificate.
For error messages and stuck profiles, see Darpan registration problems. To get back into your account later, see NGO Darpan login.
Common questions
Sign up on ngodarpan.gov.in with the NGO mobile and email, verify the OTPs, add the organisation PAN and set a password. Then log in, fill every profile tab and upload the PAN and registration certificate. After verification you generate the Darpan ID.

It is needed if the trust wants central government grants, FCRA, or 80G, as NITI Aayog states. Banks also collect the Darpan ID from non-profit clients. A trust that does none of these may not need it yet, but most active trusts do.
