Your checklist
0 of 5 doneA Darpan ID is the Unique ID that the NITI Aayog NGO Darpan portal gives to a registered NGO after its profile is verified. It is one number that identifies your trust, society or section 8 company to ministries, PFMS, banks, the FCRA system and the Income Tax Department. Darpan Portal Guide is an independent help site, not the official portal. Your ID is created and shown only on ngodarpan.gov.in.
What is Darpan ID: meaning in simple words
Darpan ID meaning: "Darpan" is the name of the portal (darpan means mirror). The ID is your organisation's number in that national register. You will see it called by many names: NGO Darpan ID, NGO Darpan Unique ID, Darpan Unique ID, Darpan number, NGO Darpan number or UIN. They all mean the same thing: the NGO Darpan portal unique ID. Every Darpan ID for NGO, trust or company follows one pattern.
The Darpan ID means two things to a funder. First, your organisation exists in the government's NGO database. Second, a Darpan administrator has checked your basic documents. It does not mean a grant is approved or that the government vouches for your work.
A Parliament answer from the government describes it as a "system generated Unique ID" created for each organisation that signs on. You do not choose it, and you cannot buy a particular number.
Darpan ID format: what each part means
We checked the pattern against IDs printed in official documents, including a Health Ministry user manual and the Bureau of Indian Standards list of registered consumer organisations. Every real ID follows the same shape:
| Part | Looks like | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| State code | 2 capital letters, such as AP, DL, UP, CG | The state or union territory in the NGO's profile |
| Year | 4 digits | The year the record was created on the portal. It is not your trust or society registration year. |
| Serial number | 7 digits, with leading zeros | The running number given by the system |
The parts are joined with a forward slash: XX/YYYY/NNNNNNN. Some grant portals do not accept the slash. The Health Ministry's NGO manual, for example, asks users to replace each "/" with "_" while typing the Darpan number. Read the instructions of the portal you are filling. Use the decoder below to split any ID into its parts.
Where the Darpan ID is used
- Central grant portals: ministry portals such as e-Anudaan and the Ministry of Social Justice grant portal ask for the NGO Unique ID with your PAN to create a login. See MSJE grants.
- PFMS: a government circular says the financial sanction for an NGO grant cannot be generated in PFMS without the Darpan ID. When the NGO is added as an agency, the ID is entered and the system fetches the NGO details.
- FCRA and 80G: NITI Aayog states the Darpan ID is needed for FCRA registration or renewal and for 80G. See FCRA and 12A and 80G.
- Banks and demat accounts: under the money laundering record rules, financial institutions must collect the Darpan ID of non-profit clients. Your bank may ask for it in KYC.
- CSR partners: companies often ask for it in their NGO forms along with CSR-1. See CSR-1 registration.
Where to submit the NGO Darpan ID? Only in the official form that asks for it. You do not send it to NITI Aayog.
How to get Darpan ID: creation step by step
Darpan ID creation happens in two stages. First, sign up and fill the full profile. Second, after the Darpan administrator verifies it, you log in and generate the ID. How to generate unique ID in NGO Darpan? Look for the option in your logged-in profile once the verification email arrives. The full process is on Darpan registration.
In how much time does the unique ID come? The official sign-up guide says that if your documents are in order, an email arrives within 48 hours of verification. It can take longer. If it has been many days, check that your profile shows 100%.
The steps are the same for a Darpan ID for trust, for a society, and a Darpan ID for section 8 company. Only the Act name and registration papers change.
How to find your NGO Darpan ID
- Log in on the official portal. The ID shows in your profile. If you forgot the password, use the forgot password option with your PAN, mobile or email. See NGO Darpan login.
- Search your NGO's name in the public directory on the portal. See NGO Darpan search.
- Check old emails from the portal, grant applications or your bank KYC papers.
Save a PDF or print of the profile page showing the ID. That is the copy most funders want. See Darpan certificate download.
Darpan ID verification for any NGO
Darpan ID verification is simple. Search the NGO in the public directory on ngodarpan.gov.in. Then match the name, registration number, state and address with the papers the NGO gave you. A mismatch is a reason to ask questions before you donate or partner. Remember: an ID only proves the NGO is listed. It does not rate the NGO's work.
Darpan ID not generated or lost
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Profile 100% but no email | Wait a few working days, check spam, then log in and look for the generate option. |
| Profile stuck below 100% | Open every tab and save. Check at least three office bearers are added. |
| Documents not accepted | Upload clear scans of PAN and registration certificate. Fix any name mismatch. |
| ID forgotten | Log in and read it from the profile, or search the public directory. |
| Grant portal says ID invalid | Check the typing format that portal wants, including "/" or "_". Check that PAN matches. |
You cannot "regenerate" a fresh ID for the same NGO. If details changed, edit the profile instead. More fixes are on Darpan registration problems.
Common questions
It is the system generated number the NGO Darpan portal gives an organisation after its profile is verified. It identifies your NGO to ministries, PFMS, banks and other government systems. Darpan ID, Darpan number and UIN all mean the same.
Sign up on ngodarpan.gov.in, fill all profile tabs to 100% and upload your PAN and registration certificate. After the verification email, log in and generate the ID.
It is the year the record was created on the portal. It is not the year your trust or society was registered, so the two often differ.
Log in on the official portal and read it from your profile. If you cannot log in, reset the password with your PAN, mobile or email, or find your NGO in the public directory.
In PFMS, the NGO agency record has a field for the Darpan ID, and the system fetches NGO details from it. For agencies already in PFMS, the funding ministry's programme division usually adds it. Ask the department that funds you.
No. Every organisation type gets the same kind of ID with a state code, year and serial number. Only the papers you upload differ.
